The Giza Camel

Abu Simbel
Ramses II cut four twenty-metre versions of himself into a cliff above the Nile, and in the 1960s engineers sawed the whole temple into blocks and rebuilt it sixty metres higher to save it from Lake Nasser. It is three hours of desert road south of Aswan, and worth every one of them.

Hurghada’s reef starts twenty minutes offshore.
Egypt’s second half is underwater. Boats leave the marina after breakfast for Giftun and Orange Bay, dolphins turn up on the way, and the desert behind the hotels fills the afternoon with quad tracks.
In Upper Egypt, the afternoon is not for sightseeing.
Luxor and Aswan sit well past 40°C from May to September, and the tomb corridors hold the heat long after the sun drops. The local answer is an Egyptian shape to the day: temples and balloons at first light, a museum or a boat deck through the middle, the desert again at dusk.
